Currently tasked with excising the sloppiness from three programmes
for the Wiener Philharmoniker’s upcoming tour of Germany and North America,
Franz Welser-Möst has chosen to lighten his load by ditching his Opera Ball
conducting gig at 48 hours notice. Franzi, who is reportedly feeling unwell, will be replaced by Peter Schneider. This blog isn’t the most Franzi-friendly
corner of the internet, but of all the things a Vienna GMD can farm out to a
Staatsoper stalwart like Schneider, this tacky magnet for Z-listers isn’t a bad
choice. The highlight of last year’s ball was the edifying sight of Angela Gheorghiu
groping Georges Prêtre’s midriff.Wednesday, 6 February 2013
